Ever since the very first time I came across the term upcycle, I have been an admirer of it, and what it means. I regularly scan magazines, papers and websites for inventive ways to use old stuff and convert it for new uses. I know I am not alone in this new hobby, and as such will be sharing the best ideas I come up with, come across, and attempt with you here.

I have been pretty diligent with not throwing out clothing that has become too thread bear, or worn out to donate. In addition, I am of the type personality that won’t allow for me to leave things lying about in a stack. One too many visits to my friend the hoarder has scared me into a propensity to use it or lose it. Thus, I will admit to having tried a few less than great attempts to upcycle stuff like stockings, bridesmaid dresses, and beach towels. Yet, there were successful projects as well, so I persevere.

This time around, I have set my sights on recycling a batch of jeans I’ve collected from friends and family. Initially, I was going to make decorative pillows for our porch swing. Seemed like a cute enough idea, then it was going to be a bag to carry groceries in, also adorable. And the clock started to tick away in my head that said you’ve held on to this pile of jeans for too long now. Make up your mind, and hop to the part where you generate something of use, or to some other home they must go.

Then right in the nick of time, I found one other way to re-purpose them that I liked best of all. The project I have chosen is to turn the worn to pieces jeans into is an area rug. It appeals most due to the fact that we really are in need of an area rug, and this way we all get to enjoy regular interaction with our retired jeans. To complete the task all you need is to cut the material into strips as long as you want the rug to be, and wide enough to fold the fabric over one time. Then the strips are attached by the simple zig zag stitch. Be aware of the fact that if you do not leave enough space at the ends of the strips you run the risk of them fraying. Thus, you will be left with a mass of shreds instead of the efficient and crafty rug you intended to hand design.

If I were to be completely honest, I would have to admit that in the first three flats I lived in I didn’t have a nightstand. So, I expect it goes without saying that it took me some time to not only acquire one of them, but a pair. Why, well I was trying to live within my meager budget limitations, and had already put too much loot into a couple of pieces of furniture. My intention was that I would slowly but surely buy good articles of furniture to keep for a long time, and supplement with some lesser quality ones till I could afford better.

Funny thing is, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy the stuff I knew would be only temporary. It turned out that, if I could not beg borrow or steal it from my parents home and no friends were giving it away, I went without. Which brings me to how I went without any bedside tables for several years. Now some would say this was frugal, prudent, and commendable to live with such restraint. Now, I know it was just plain silly, stubborn or egotistical.

My message to you is to spring for at least one nightstand in your abode. It is tremendously useful. If you purchase wisely, or keep an eye out for discards it can later be used elsewhere in a house. When you get your first set of real bedside tables you can move the old make due one into a hallway, or the entranceway and pop a lamp or vase of flowers on it. Trust me, you can sand it down, paint it or a ton of other things but it won’t be a waste as long as you get one with nice lines, and a stylish quality.

You can cover a bedroom in a pretty pink wash from top to bottom, but without the proper lighting it will never feel romantic. Dusky pink roses in bouquets of twenty placed strategically around the room, and even some of those petals strewn here and there will not do it either, because lighting matters to a great degree. So, what are some of the most romantic lights around? Well texture and a bit of glitz is what we always look for.

Take for example the base of an Italian alabaster lamp paired with a ruffled satin lampshade. If you are having the shade made then have the edge done to match any decoration that may exist on the base. If it is scalloped then go for scalloped, if it is delicate then request dainty eyelet. To further embellish, and add more of that lusty accent hanging beads draped from the edge says it all. Or, run a ribbon down the sides and finish off with ribbon roses at the tips. Another wonderful light is the sconce. There are many new ones on the market made to look antique, but if you are able to locate the real deal they will be well worth it as the natural aging and patina, depending on the material they are made of simply can’t be replicated in exactly the

Far too often people who create home offices forget what a great alternative used office furniture can be. Either they are flustered over the thought of spending money on new furniture, and revert immediately to going the makeshift route with whatever they can pull together from their own attics or basements. Or, they think for a fresh start on whatever business they are going to be conducting from home the furnishings need to be new.

As it turns out, what those homeowners are overlooking is the most sensible of options. To obtain a high quality second hand desk, table or chairs you need not scour sales, it can all be found in one place nowadays. So, you need not “wing” it when it comes to measurements, or details regarding the pieces, you can speak to a live representative. You can even have it the next day if you are raring to go.

If you still don’t feel that you will be able to strike the right balance when it comes to setting up your home office, go here for inspiration. No need to re-invent the wheel. With so many people working from home these days, you can just follow the format that is well established, and fine tuned by others who have been there and done that already. Only difference is you will save by choosing from used furniture, where they might not have, so while you won’t have reinvented the wheel you will have improved upon it.

The buzz words continue to be green, and eco. Many of us try to do our part to be kinder to ourselves and the planet with products that are environmentally friendly. Yet, I hear relatively little on the subject of cookware in this context. What does constitute healthy cookware? How do we green our cooking tools? And without them, are we putting those we serve at risk of those horrible things the newspapers and newscasters have spoken of?

Cooking your morning eggs on an aluminum skillet may lead to Alzheimer’s disease down the road. Those pretty copper pots leach poison into your food. And nonstick pans? Not worth the convenience. They may cause cancer.

Turns out, some of those scares were just that, and studies show that more than likely than not cooking with an aluminium skillet is not going to give you and those you love Alzheimer’s. Nor will the other pots and pans give you other horrific side-effects later on down the road. Come to find out, unless you are using some extremely old cookware, everything else is coated with one thing or another to be safe.

However, there are certain foods that can have chemical reactions with certain pots or pans. So the truth of the matter is not that you need to replace them, but instead need an education on what to cook in which cooking container.

When a room’s decor becomes outdated, or just boring a homeowner may think the only way to fix it is a complete overhaul. The thought of ditching the furniture that presently fills it, along with all the accessories may sound like the only way, but trust me it isn’t. You can make well selected revisions and still achieve the conversion that is desired.

There are two ways I recommend making such a modification, either switch out the headboard and footboard of the bed, or replace all of the bedding. As the bed is the central focus of most bedrooms, we will assume for purposes of this exercise this is the layout of your room. That makes it the clear object to amend. While one person might find the process of selecting a new bed easier than that of choosing new bed linens it is important to identify that both can be dominating enough to institute this improvement.

For those who prefer the replace the bed option, it is vital that you recognize that the new bed be substantially different from the one you already have in place. We are creatures of habit, and it is extremely common for us to gravitate toward what we previously chose. You must commit to something altogether dissimilar to make this successful.

For instance if you have a fabric covered headboard, why not consider a sleigh bed? Or if you have an antique oak bed, a contemporary leather one would definitely make a new statement. Keep this in mind, if you want to make a change, you need to accept change.

Or if you are like me, and are more inspired to replace the bedding then make it count. This is my choice for change because it is more often than not less of an investment, so I can be more relaxed about trying something new. So listen, up this is your chance to be brave, bold or to tone things down if you that is what you seek. The point is that going from one large floral duvet cover to another is not going to cut it here. Moving from that old floral cotton duvet to a monochromatic satin bedset will though.

Now hop to it, you could be sleeping in a made over bedroom in no time at all. But it will require action, and perhaps a bit of that audacious spirit we all carry around within us.

You have noticed that your kitchen drawers and cabinets are filled to the brim, and yet there is no other storage to be found. Well, instead of looking at what already exists, how about you make storage. No, don’t groan, its simple, and nearly free.

Just look up, and chances are you have room in your kitchen to hang a pot rack. Great, check you do have the space, but the funds to purchase one are lacking. Fine, just make one yourself.

Think for a minute, what do you have that is not in use, but is still in a good form. Do you have a garden gate, a cake cooling rack, or what about a window frame? All will make grand pot racks. Depending on the state that these items are in, you may want to spruce them up with a coat of paint or two, but other than that cosmetic detail you need little else. All right, you do need chains, and S hooks, but both are readily available, and cheap, cheap, cheap.

But, I think this project should probably come with a warning, once you complete this you are destined to start to look at other articles that are begging to be put to good use in ways you never have before.

With in the memories that some of us house in our heads we recall a time when vanities were commonplace. It was a period when women had properly allocated space within their bedrooms to neatly layout, and house their creams, lotions, makeup, perfumes, jewelry, hairbrushes, powders, and so much more. If you are unfamiliar with this, imagine an area completely devoted to all the things girls regularly use to make us beautiful, presentable, and pampered.

Though they may not have always been practical, I have never gone without one of these in some form or fashion. But now, I want a real one of my own. To make my vanity table I chose more modern materials than were handy during the vanity tables heyday. It suits the room better, and makes better sense for me. The chair and mirror too are more of a reflection of my style today, than of that of yesteryear and I like it that way.

For I am not attempting to harken back to by gone era, just to retrieve an asset from it. I must tell you, to have all of my tricks of the beauty trade, favourite accessories and fragrances surround me is something I hope never to go without again. Magnifique!

There is little connection between utilitarian style sliding doors and romance, in fact I am unable to make even one. So, if you have a space that has such purposeful, but less than sexy style doors covering closets, consider making a move. We recommend replacing them with delicious, and sensual French doors with mirror panels in pace of the window section.

French doors without any inserts are also preferable to the old fashioned accordion, or sliding doors referred to in the beginning. However, we think opting for mirrors makes the best sense as they will open any space up, and provide an interesting visual reflection of the other elements that fill the room.

So, if you make this change in the bedroom, then the beautiful bedding, soft carpet, and abundant curtains will be within vie from different angles. In a dinning room , it is supposed to be wonderful to reflect the food laid out on the table in a mirror. And we think positive energy, and prosperity are very romantic.

Style, it has been claimed, is what many individuals crave, and only a few can generate. I simply do not agree, but at the same time acknowledge it is actually irrelevant. Why you ask? Well, think about all those designers and decorators who are said to have the ability to create a style, and then consider how they came to have that trait. The answer to this will quite frequently be, they learned it from someone else, or a group of others. These people in the know will be on the payroll of places like Fashion4Home, thus Fashion4Home’s designer furniture will make the grade. So, we can benefit directly from all that experience and knowledge, but can skip the part where we study and work hard to acquire it.

If you want to be more of a participant, look into what new designers are showing, and getting raves for. The premise here is, as it often is, do not recreate the wheel. Sure, you can choose the type of wheel, and even the colour, but by all means do not try to make a new wheel. Hopefully, that did not confuse you, as it was never up for debate for you to literally make a wheel. The point here really is that you can be stylish by following the lead of those who have a style down pat. Then pat yourself on the back every time you get a compliment over that modern living room of yours, or that Zen like bedroom.
